How Shopify fees actually work
Shopify is different from Stripe, Square, and PayPal — it's not just a payment processor. It's a full e-commerce platform (storefront, checkout, inventory, themes, apps), and the payment processing is just one piece. So your total cost has two parts:
- A flat monthly subscription — $5 (Starter), $39 (Basic), $105 (Shopify), or $399 (Advanced).
- Per-transaction fees — varies by plan and payment type, same formula as every other processor:
fee = (amount × rate%) + fixed
On Shopify Payments (their built-in processor), a $100 online sale on the Basic plan costs $100 × 0.029 + $0.30 = $3.20 — identical to Stripe. The plan upgrade to Shopify ($105/mo) drops the rate to 2.7% + $0.30, and Advanced ($399/mo) drops it to 2.5% + $0.30.
If you use a third-party gateway instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify charges an additional penalty on top of the gateway's own fee. For most merchants, using Shopify Payments is the right choice on pure cost.
